The documentary is about the making of the movie “Malegaon ka Superman’. It’s a fascinating story of a motley crew of Malegaons for whom their filmmaking is a labor of love and not an enterprise in commercial interests. Juxtaposing the frenzied production activities against a stark socio-economic backdrop of Malegaon, the documentary reveals the cathartic and spellbinding importance of the ‘magic of movies’ on the people. Ironically, all this is not a sustained effort to rise above their exploitative milieu but merely a temporary escape into the fantastical world of films.

Health care – a universal nightmare for governance. Bring in 1 billion people and the magnitude of the responsibility is unimaginable. This documentary gets personal because one of them lost his wife in a road accident because there were not enough ambulances and the hospital did not care enough. So Kushwaha, a 38 year-old lawyer, created his own ‘On-line Ambulance Service” for accident victims because he believes that no one has to die. He takes this one step further by picking up the helpless and homeless found in the city and builds shelters for the mentally challenged who have been abandoned by their families. This is a story of unbelievable courage of an individual determined to turn a personal tragedy into a communal good.

Synopsis

It is the most basic requirement of human survival – clean drinking water. Yet, about 1 billion people do not have access to it, 80% live in sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern and Southern Asia. About 4,500 children die every day because they have no clean drinking water. This three-part series looks at the dire state of the common people from India to Indonesia to Philippines and the problems they face in getting clean drinking water.

Women, Water & 10,000 Miles focuses on the story of one woman and a little girl who live in the most arid part of the Rajasthan state where the annual rainfall varies from 10 to 40 cm. It is quite often erratic, so much so that the entire rainfall of the year may fall on a single day and the rest of the year may be dry. In India, water is solely a woman’s problem. From the time she is able to walk, she learns that it is her job to find and get water for the entire household. In her lifetime, she would have walked more than 1,000 miles to get water.

They live in ghettoes and do menial jobs. They live in constant fear of being publicly humiliated, paraded naked, beaten and raped. They are not allowed to drink from the same wells as the upper castes or drink from the same cups at tea stalls. 138 million of them live like this everyday. They are the Dalits or the Untouchables of India. Untouchability was outlawed in 1955 but it still exists as a social institution in Indian society. This is a powerful documentary about one Dalit woman’s crusade against the atrocities to fellow human beings who are entrapped within their own caste. Meet Ruth Manorama, winner of the Right to Livelihood Award or the Alternate Nobel Peace Prize, and watch her story from inside the ghettoes of the untouchables.
